TOOLS FOR THE DYSLEXIC:LEARNING TO NAVIGATE THROUGH A NON-DYSLEXIC WORLD WHEN YOU VIEW THE WORLD COMPLETELY DIFFERENTLY
---------------------------------------
As a biology major in college writing out DNA sequences, I regularly flipped the amino acids for others not only getting it completely incorrect, but it made my professors wonder how I could possibly continue with a degree in biology. Personally, I believe teachers will sometimes overlook dyslexia because it takes more energy out of their class schedules to help a student learn. Hopefully, you will learn the tools you or your loved one need to succeed when dealing with this learning disability. Yes, it was incredibly frustrating, but I also learned how to deal with my dyslexic moments so I could speak and write correctly for him. This is a sad truth of our educational system as many teachers will not work harder to help all of their students. Later on, I got a job working for a politician writing letters for him to constituents. It happened to be wonderful for me because it allowed me to look at the world in the way that I did. In addition, teachers have to "revamp" their classroom routine to help dyslexic students and when they have a "schedule" to keep, they are anything but interested and motivated to help students learn.
PUBLIC SPEAKING
---------------------------------------
Take a second or two to do this. This could be the difference between a promotion, or your continued work at a dead end job. Since dyslexics flip pronouns around and will say an inversion of what they mean to say, the simple task of thinking through a sentence or phrase will help to eliminate this embarrassing mistake. Let this be a lesson to you.
VERB AGREEMENTS
---------------------------------------
" If the individual is still working for the company, you shouldn't be using a past tense anywhere in this sentence. When speaking with someone else, you should find that slowing down when you speak and correcting what you say will help you form correct sentences. So, this previous sentence is an example of a "dyslexic" moment, and unfortunately, a great example of how you would demonstrate to the person you are speaking with that you do not understand verb agreement.
WRITING
---------------------------------------
I hope you will find e-mail easier for you when communicating with others. Instead of waiting for "an appropriate time" to telephone someone, you can e-mail them any time of day or night and they can answer you at their leisure. Write it first, then go back and look at it again.
TAKING STANDARDIZED TESTS
---------------------------------------
You will end up customizing tools you can use to take and pass a standardized exam. By looking at other exams, this will help you understand the format of the standardized test. For example, the key phrases in this sentence will be underlined for you so you understand what the information is in the question sentence. A B C D) When you go to fill in the answer, double check it against the question making sure you have in fact filled in answer A. "The author is asking me to find the best answer to his statement of, "the feral cat population is heavy in certain parts of the country. 21. Next, look for a pattern. I surely hope you do not have trouble taking a standardized test, but if you do, it is because most dyslexics view the world very differently then people who do not suffer from dyslexia. Underlining key phrases in standardized tests will help you organize your thoughts to answer the questions correctly and will also help you pick the appropriate answer. Cats that are not spayed and neutered
B. Cats "dumped" by their owners in certain locations such as rivers, mountains and shopping centers
C.
INSTRUCTIONS
---------------------------------------
Following driving instructions can be so frustrating yet so embarrassing when I make any mistake in front of another person. If you are a visual person, you should look at a map on Google Earth to get an idea of where you are going before you start driving. In addition, simple tasks of left and right can be exceedingly difficult for me when I am driving to a location different then how the directions have me approaching the location. With time though, I have figured out a variety of tools I can use to help me beat dyslexia in my adulthood. I find that my flip flopping nature has not changed, but with the tools I have put in place, I have been able to figure out quickly what I did wrong to fix it efficiently. The bottom line for combating dyslexia simply is getting into the hang of rereading, proofreading, double and triple checking everything you say or do. You will constantly need to adjust your life to living with dyslexia, and will constantly need to analyze your life to figure out where you are having dyslexic moments.
